Editorial

Politicise the Issue

The Indian government announced the rerun of the odd-even vehicle rationing system from next week owing to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued warnings related to construction activities, traffic pollution as well as paddy stubble burning which causes environmental pollution. This method of odd-even is an unsustainable one in the long term as it is affected by sudden warning bells on the situation. These moves only highlight the unpreparedness attitude of the government and not its effectiveness. The government on its part is playing politics over the environmental degradation issue. With political parties blaming one another over the inefficiency of the situation and controlling it, the present view is of a play of green politics. However, this is not what should be done at the moment- the need of the hour is to tackle the pollution situation effectively rather than playing green politics.
