The recently held 23rd Conference of Parties (CoP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is a pit stop for next year’s CoP when the talk on the Paris Climate Change treaty would be duly finalized. But like earlier CoPs, the Bonn conference took a long time as the member nations were opinion divided on the agenda of a pre-CoP meeting scheduled next year. In the 12 days long 23rd CoP, all developed as well as developing countries talked about whether the next year meeting should include an assessment of the climate change mitigation progress and commitments before the year 2020. Unlike the Paris Climate Agreement, the focus of the pre-2020 obligations like reducing the emissions and providing financial support to the developing countries lies solely to the developing countries. If the countries fail on its part to fulfill the obligations within three years, the emerging economies would be taking a large share of the climate change burden. In the recent CoP 23, both developed and developing countries reached only a partial agreement. the developed countries would submit a good report by May of 2019 on the progress of the pre-2020 commitments. The countries need to work properly on the commitments and focus hard to get a good report by next year.
